Wasini Island – Kisite Mpunguti Marine Park & Reserve

Wasini & Kisite Mpunguti Marine Park destination sits along Kenya’s southern coastline, right between Shimoni and the Pemba Channel. The destination seamlessly integrates two protected zones: the 39-square-kilometer Kisite/Mpunguti Marine Park, renowned for its vibrant coral reefs, seagrass beds, and dramatic drop-off walls, and Wasini Island, a 6-square-kilometer area characterized by coral-limestone formations, tidal flats, and active mangrove creeks, with a local village providing authentic cultural engagement.

Together, these areas create an exceptional marine environment—arguably one of the richest in East Africa. Water temperatures remain consistently inviting (24–28°C), and underwater visibility often exceeds 30 meters. These are ideal conditions for diving and snorkeling.

Snorkeling & Scuba Diving
Guests embark on traditional dhows to Kisite’s renowned coral reefs, guided by experienced snorkel leaders. The calm, clear waters at signature sites such as “Elephant Arch” and “Turtle Rock” position Wasini as a premier destination for day-trip snorkeling, suitable for both novice and seasoned enthusiasts.
For certified divers, professional operators facilitate dives reaching 30–40 meters, where schools of giant trevally and the occasional reef shark or hammerhead can be observed.

Tidal-Pool & Mangrove Walks
During low tide, Wasini’s reef shelf reveals a network of clear tidal pools. Local guides, well-versed in the area’s marine life, lead guests across these flats, highlighting unique species such as anemones, hermit crabs, and juvenile fish. Dugout canoe excursions through mangrove creeks offer additional opportunities for wildlife observation, including kingfishers and sun-basking monitor lizards.

Dolphin-Watching & Dhow Cruises
In the late afternoon, dhow cruises along Wasini’s western shores provide an opportunity to observe spinner and bottlenose dolphins. Onboard naturalists interpret the dolphins’ behaviors and consult local fishermen to identify optimal viewing areas. Each cruise concludes with striking sunset views of Wasini’s silhouette—a memorable experience for visitors seeking both relaxation and wildlife encounters.
